  KLM (KL) Royal Dutch Airlines
  KLM (KL) Royal Dutch Airlines is a worldwide airline company based in the Netherlands. It comprises the core of the KLM Group, which further includes KLM Cityhopper, transavia.com and Martinair. KLM works very closely with Air France within the AIR FRANCE KLM Group, which exists since the two companies merged in 2004. The AIR FRANCE KLM Group is Europe’s leading group in the airline business. KLM and Air France each operate their own networks within a Dual-Hub Strategy. The two hubs are Air France’s home base, Paris Charles de Gaulle and KLM’s home base, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Together with its partners, KLM offers passengers and cargo shippers more than 250 destinations, whether none stop connections or links to secondary destinations. Both KLM and Air France are members of SkyTeam, one of the global airline alliances. With ten member airlines as of 2009, SkyTeam is the world’s second-largest alliance in terms of market share. As SkyTeam members, Air France and KLM play an important role in North America, Europe, and Asia. And together with Kenya Airways, they enjoy a strong position in Africa as well.

The oldest airline in the world

 KLM is the oldest airline in the world still operating under its original name. It has 33,000 employees (as of March 2007). The merging of KLM with Air France in May 2004 created Air France-KLM. Air France-KLM is incorporated under French law with headquarters at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport. Both Air France and KLM continue to fly under their distinct brand names.

  Aims of KLM

KLM’s  works to achieve profitable growth that contributes to its own corporate aims as well as to economic and social development.
Offering reliability and a healthy dose of Dutch pragmatism, KLM provides customers with innovative products and safe, efficient and service-oriented operations paying proactive attention to the environment and corporate social responsibility. Since four years, Air France KLM is the leading airline in the Dow Jones Sustainability indexes, and the only airline in the “Global 100” list.

KLM works to create sustainable growth at Schiphol Airport, to gain access to every market that will increase the quality of its network, and to maintain a level playing field for all industry players. It also works to ensure a balance between the companies interests and those of the people living and working close to the airport.

Throughout the years, KLM has put together cooperative efforts with a variety of airlines. The network developed by the KLM Group and its partners is spreading across the entire world. It gives access to 928 destinations in 174 countries on six continents. By connecting these networks and making quick transfers at one of our many hubs, travellers can reach almost every point on the earth.

  Cooperation Alliances

There are currently three major cooperation alliances in the aviation world:
SkyTeam which includes KLM and Air France;
One World which includes British Airways;

Economy Class

You can reserve in advance to ensure you get the seat you prefer. You’ll also have a selection of international newspapers to choose from. Shortly before arrival, you’ll see up-to-the-minute flight transfer information. Stretch your legs and enjoy extra room! By paying a surcharge, you can reserve a seat with extra legroom. Or select a seat in a row with just two seats. You can make these arrangements when you check in online or at a self-service check-in or transfer machine at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Simply pay with your credit card. As a WorldPerks or Flying Blue Gold or Platinum member, you pay nothing extra for a preferred seat From December 2009 onwards, KLM will be offering an additional travel class on all intercontinental flights operated by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines - The Economy Comfort Zone - or KLM Premium Economy Class. The Comfort Zone offers up to 10 cm more legroom and back supports that can recline twice as far in comparison to the regular Economy Class. Economy Comfort passengers will also be able to disembark quicker after landing, as the Comfort Zone is located at the front of the Economy Class and therefore nearer to the exits. KLM’s entire intercontinental fleet will be equipped with the new zone. The first aircraft have already been converted. The remaining aircraft will follow in the months ahead, enabling all passengers to choose the Economy Comfort zone on intercontinental flights from December 2009. Flying Blue Platinum members and passengers travelling on a full-flex Economy Class ticket can book Economy Comfort seats without a surcharge. Flying Blue Gold members will be offered a 50% discount and Flying Blue Silver members 25%. The service in Economy Comfort will be the same as that in Economy Class.

In Flight Meals

  Intercontinental Economy passengers have a choice between two different main meals. Depending on the flight time, you’ll also be served breakfast, soup or a snack. The drinks service offers you an extensive selection of hot and cold alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, and snacks are always available from the galley.

On Board Entertainment

All aircraft feature a variety of audio and video entertainment. The newest Boeing 777s and Airbus A330s are equipped with personal video screens on every seat and an interactive entertainment system complete with video games and individual telephones. You can even send text messages to any mobile phone or e-mail address anywhere in the world – and receive replies right at your seat!

Earn Miles

For most miles flown with KLM, Air France, Kenya Airways, Air Europa or any other member of SkyTeam, you are rewarded with one Award Mile and one Level Mile. If you choose to fly with one of the other airline partners, most miles flown are rewarded with one Award Mile. The total number of Miles credited to your account depends on the distance of your flight and the class you travel in. There is a minimum of 500 Award and Level Miles on most tickets for domestic flights. On most tickets for international flights, there is a minimum of 750 Award and Level Miles offered. Award tickets, Air Miles tickets and other similar tickets are not eligible for Miles. Tickets in some classes may earn fewer or no Miles.
You can earn two kinds of Miles: Award Miles and Level Miles. Award Miles add up to great offers: from Award tickets to hotel and car rental packages. Miles remain valid as long as you make a minimum of only one eligible flight every 3 years with KLM, Air France or any other member of the SkyTeam alliance. Level Miles take you to a higher level in Flying Blue’s membership: from Ivory to Silver, Gold or Platinum. Every year Level Miles are put back to zero in the level check at December 31st.
